Ecclesiastes – Legacy

Ecclesiastes – Legacy

What is it that you are leaving behind; what will be your legacy? For many, there is a vain striving with inheritances that ultimately leaves our children with just more stuff – and we can rarely transfer the work and effort that it took to amass such possessions.  What if there was something else we could invest in?

Observations:

  1. Your legacy is not about you
  2. Your legacy is not what you’ve purchased
  3. Your legacy is not what you’ve achieved
  4. Your legacy is not what you’ve earned
  5. Your legacy is not what you’ve stored up for yourself

Conclusions: Your lasting legacy through Jesus is

  1. Modeling a life that is pleasing God,
  2. which results in wisdom, knowledge, & joy

Application: How do I model it?

  1. By recognizing God’s involvement in every aspect of life
  2. By seeking Him as the source of satisfaction and delight in life
  3. By maturing your character towards wisdom, knowledge, and joy

– How are you investing towards a lasting legacy?

Let’s share ideas:
Who stands out in your heart as someone who made an investment in your life for Jesus?
Describe what they did and why it was impactful even to today?

Luke 12:13-21

“Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’ “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’ “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’”

John 17:3

“Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”

John 5:19

“Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.”

John 7:16

“Jesus answered, “My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me.”

John 12:49

“For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken.”

John 14:24

“Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.”

Psalm 37:4

“Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart.”
