Admonishment requires Spirit-led discipline from both the speaker and listener. Loving admonishment calls one another toward repentance and Christlike holiness through gracious truthful encouragement.

Definition – Admonishment: A loving warning or correction given to a fellow believer with the intent of instructing and encouraging them to align their mindset with God’s truth. It’s generally given in response to an observed sinful or harmful behavior.

Observations:

Admonishment occurs between brothers and sisters in the family of God
The purpose of admonishment is to help someone bring their thinking and/or actions into alignment with God’s Word
Admonishment is to be done with love for the good of the admonishee and the body

Conclusions:

Proper admonishment requires that both admonisher and admonishee have a relationship with Christ and with each other
The admonisher communicates directly with the admonishee
Both the admonisher and the admonishee must base their assessment on scripture
Be ready and willing to walk through it together but let the Holy Spirit lead

Application:

Admonisher
1. Before giving admonishment, assess your motives to ensure they are Godly
2. When giving admonishment, show the same grace that Christ has shown you
Admonishee
1. When receiving admonishment, resist your inclination to respond in pride
2. Be thankful that your brother or sister has your back

1 Thessalonians 5:14

“And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone.”

Colossians 3:15-17

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

1 Corinthians 5:9-13

“I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people. What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.”

Matthew 7:1-5

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”
