Majesty – Anthropology

God provides an unexpected expression of his praise. Although He has ordained humans to rule His creation, our sin has placed us as enemies with our Creator. We need a Savior, the God-man, who can reorder our human nature to return to our proper design. 

Observations:

  1. Creation is designed to humble us, not overwhelm towards insignificance
    – Yet, God’s name is contested
  2. God models His work and then delegates to mankind to continue in it
    – Yet, mankind is created will a lesser glory than the angels
  3. God has set His glory out of reach
    – Yet, God’s reputation is on the line as determined by his design
  4. God’s Son is the object of His majesty

Conclusions: 

  1. Humans have been uniquely fashioned for God’s majesty
    A. Mind – Fashioned to know
    B. Body – Fashioned to work
    C. Nature – Fashioned to worship
  2. Humans have exchanged God’s majesty in sin
  3. Jesus has reclaimed the majesty of God’s name

Application: 

  • Order your God given faculties under Jesus’ rule
    A. Renew your mind
    B. Redeem the work of your hands
    C. Recategorize spiritual strength as humility

Romans 2:17-24

“Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and boast in God; if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law; if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark, an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of little children, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth—  you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal? You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law? As it is written: “God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”

Matthew 3:16-17

“As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

Philippians 2:6-11

Romans 1:18-27

They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen. Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.”

Hebrews 2:6-9

“But there is a place where someone has testified: “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, a son of man that you care for him? You made them a little lower than the angels; you crowned them with glory and honor and put everything under their feet.” In putting everything under them, God left nothing that is not subject to them. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them. But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.”

Romans 12:2

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

2 Corinthians 12:8-10

“Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
