The disciples of Jesus Christ will be known by their love for one another. However, it is unfortunately all too easy for churches today to remain cold, individual, distant, and unconcerned for each other. These moments of apathy and disconnectedness are modern expressions of “playing church.”
Observations:
- Love is from God
- Love is modeled by God
- Love is defined by God
- Love is commanded by God
Conclusions:
- God’s love is an end in itself
- God’s love isn’t dependent on outcomes
- God’s love risks all
- God’s love secures all
Application:
- Love one another as an expression of faith
- Love one another as dependent upon “Christ in you”
- Love one another sacrificially
John 15:10; 12
“If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love… My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.”
Matthew 5:43-47
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[a] and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?”
Romans 5:6-8
“You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Matthew 21:33-39
“Listen to another parable: There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a winepress in it and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place. When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his fruit. “The tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned a third. Then he sent other servants to them, more than the first time, and the tenants treated them the same way. Last of all, he sent his son to them. ‘They will respect my son,’ he said. “But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him and take his inheritance.’ So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.”

Then come, follow me.” At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth. Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!” The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, “Who then can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”
