The Secret of Contentment for God’s People

The Secret of Contentment for God’s People

We live in a world that encourages excess.  Even if it isn’t greed or gluttony, the term FOMO or “Fear of missing out” has our young people paralyzed to their phones and social networks to make sure they’ve seen and heard it all!

This kind of lifestyle not only shackles us to the temporary world, but it cuts short our effectiveness for the Lord.  If we lack “contentment” we will be missing the key ingredient to face the difficulties of this life.

Observations & Conclusions:

Definition of Contentment = to be “satisfied in Christ

1. Contentment is learned

2. Contentment isn’t tied to circumstances

3. Contentment requires context

4. Contentment is all inclusive

5. Contentment covers needs and wants

6. Contentment frees you to rejoice

7. Contentment’s secret is found in the strength of Christ

Application:

  • What’s the hardest thing you can think of a Christian doing?
  • Would knowing Jesus be enough?

Philippians 3:7-9

“But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ.  What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith.”

Hebrews 11:13-16

“All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.”

Matthew 6:25-34

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?…  Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Matthew 5:38-42

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.”

Matthew 6:19-21

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

1 Timothy 6:6-10

“But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.  But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.  Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.  For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”

Ecclesiastes 1:8

“All things are wearisome,
    more than one can say.
The eye never has enough of seeing,
nor the ear its fill of hearing.”

Matthew 16:24-25

“Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.”
